Start by pretending the market does not exist then back it off a little. Benjamin Graham said the attitude towards the market should be that you shouldn't pay much attention to it but you can't completely ignore it. The reason, I think for this is to build distance between yourself and the market. Buffet said you need to cultivate a mind which does not take much pleasure either going with the crowd or against the crowd.
